Equine Surgeon (Permanent Position) – Avenel Equine Hospital 2026
Scone Equine Group (SEG) is seeking a permanent equine surgeon, to be based at Avenel Equine Hospital. Applicants must have, or be eligible to sit, appropriate qualifications to allow registration as an Australian Specialist in Equine Surgery. These include FANZCVS, Dipl ACVS or Dipl ECVS.
SEG includes Scone Equine Hospital, Equine Podiatry and Lameness Centre, Avenel Equine Hospital and Tamworth Equine Veterinary Centre. We are the largest equine practice in the southern hemisphere, employing approximately 70 equine veterinarians during the breeding season. The group boasts an internationally recognised team of veterinarians, including 9 specialists in Equine Surgery, 6 specialists in Equine Medicine and 2 Theriogenologists.
Avenel Equine Hospital performs approximately 1200 surgical procedures annually. The surgical load is biased towards thoroughbreds, although we have a significant number of non-racing performance clients. The new surgical facility, completed in 2023, is well equipped to perform all elective and emergency procedures. Only advanced diagnostics are referred.
Avenel Equine Hospital is located in the heart of Victoria’s Thoroughbred breeding region, 1 hour from Melbourne Airport. The practice offers a comprehensive ambulatory service to equine clients in the local area as well as an Intensive Care Facility. We currently employ 15 equine veterinarians including three experienced Surgeons and two Medicine Specialists. Our facilities are purpose-built and there are dedicated standing, colic and sterile theatres, supported by three recovery rooms. There is stabling for 38 horses, spread over four barns; day patients, elective in-hospital patients, an Intensive Care facility and a dedicated Isolation facility. The facility has a hard straight trot-up area, large soft lunge ring, small hard lunge ring and multiple diagnostic rooms.
The successful applicant would create a team of three permanent equine surgeons, supported by regular locums who share the after-hours roster. Our Avenel surgeons bring a wealth of experience and are committed to providing guidance, support and training.
You will be part of a collaborative team that includes dedicated anesthetists, a Fellow, three interns, a surgery coordinator and an experienced nursing team all working together to deliver the best patient care and veterinary excellence.
Our veterinarians are well supported and have access to teams for accounts/admin, IT, HR, marketing and communications. Free Employee Assistance and an active health and wellbeing program. The practices are well managed, allowing our senior veterinarians to pursue their passions.
A preferred start date is April and it offers an attractive salary package.
