The Division of Thoracic Surgery in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford University seeks a board certified Thoracic Surgeon to join the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department as Thoracic Surgery Division Chief and Associate Professor or Professor in the University Medical Line or University Tenure Line. We are particularly interested in candidates who have demonstrated experience in academic leadership, excellence in thoracic surgical care, a strong record of scholarly research, and a commitment to faculty development, mentorship, and the education of residents and fellows.

       The major criteria for appointment for faculty in the University Medical Line shall be excellence in the overall mix of clinical care, clinical teaching, scholarly activity that advances clinical medicine, and institutional service appropriate to the programmatic need the individual is expected to fulfill.

       The predominant criterion for appointment in the University Tenure Line is a major commitment to research and teaching.

Faculty rank and line will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

The successful applicant should have an MD or equivalent degree, board certification in Thoracic Surgery, eligibility for medical licensure in the State of California, and a record of excellence and prominence in patient care, research, and education. Demonstrated experience in academic leadership, teaching, mentorship, and faculty development is also expected.

The Thoracic Surgery Division Chief within the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department will lead a large team of high-performing faculty and staff dedicated to clinical excellence, innovative research, and world-class education. The Department is seeking a surgeon-scientist leader who possesses prominence in patient care, published scholarship in basic, translational, engineering, clinical and/or population science, and a commitment to teaching the next generation.

The Division Chief will report to the Chair of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. The Division Chief role comprises administrative duties and will participate in Department activities and appropriate activities of the School of Medicine and the Stanford Healthcare System. Because programmatic needs and circumstances can evolve, the Division Chief's duties and responsibilities as described here may change; should that occur, we will discuss priorities and determine how best to achieve our shared goals.

The Division Chief will work to build on the division’s strengths to foster an outstanding Thoracic Division that excels in the three missions of clinical care, research, and education. The Division Chief will anticipate developing and supporting Thoracic Surgery programs that position Stanford as a preeminent leader in the field.

The Division Chief will implement and support robust faculty development, mentorship, and succession planning, with a strong emphasis on engagement. Recruitment, retention, mentoring, and development of faculty—especially junior faculty—as well as trainees, is a central component of the role. The Division Chief will champion quality improvement and patient-safety initiatives, collaborate with other divisions and centers to advance programmatic goals in thoracic oncology, minimally invasive thoracic surgery, robotics, and related areas as appropriate. Division Chief will strategically support, invest in, and cultivate novel research within the Thoracic Division to strengthen the division’s research portfolio and align with the department and institution’s research priorities. The Division Chief will foster educational opportunities for residents and fellows/instructors.

The activities of the Division and Department are diverse and encompass complex clinical care, innovative research, and the education and training of future leaders in cardiothoracic surgery, offering unique opportunities for the successful candidate to expand multidisciplinary programs, strengthen the Division's research portfolio, develop faculty and trainees, and shape the future of thoracic surgery at Stanford.

The expected bas pay range for this position is:

Associate Professor: $435,000 - $465,000

Professor: $525,000 - $555,000

This pay range reflects base pay, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank. It does not include all components of the School of Medicine’s faculty compensation program or pay from participation in departmental incentive compensation programs.
