Description
The Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiac Surgery at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine is seeking an Adult Cardiac Surgeon and an Advanced Heart Failure & Cardiac Transplant Surgeon to join its growing academic cardiovascular program.
Adult Cardiac Surgeon Key Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive adult cardiac surgical care, including coronary artery bypass grafting, valve surgery, and other complex adult cardiac procedures.
- Participate in and support the growth of the aortic surgery program, including operative management and protocol development for aortic pathology.
- Collaborate closely with cardiology, critical care, anesthesia, perfusion, nursing, and APP teams to deliver multidisciplinary care.
- Teach and mentor medical students, residents, fellows, and Advanced Practice Providers in adult cardiac surgery.
- Participate in divisional conferences, case reviews, and bedside teaching.
- Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives across adult cardiac surgery, including outcomes review and care standardization.
- Engage in morbidity and mortality conferences and data-driven quality improvement aligned with STS and institutional benchmarks.

Advanced Heart Failure & Cardiac Transplant Surgeon Key Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive surgical care across the spectrum of adult cardiac surgery with a focus on advanced heart failure therapies (LVAD implantation, tMCS, heart transplantation).
- Participate as a member of the advanced heart failure therapies program including participation in patient selection, perioperative management, and longitudinal follow-up.
- Support the clinical growth, quality, and operational readiness of a developing heart transplant program, in collaboration with senior surgical and medical leadership.
- Support the clinical growth, quality, and operational readiness of a developing heart transplant program, in collaboration with senior surgical and medical leadership.
- Participate in on-call and donor call responsibilities appropriate to program needs.
- Teach and mentor medical students, residents, fellows, and Advanced Practice Providers in cardiac surgery, advanced heart failure, MCS, and transplant-related care.
- Engage in clinical, translational, or outcomes-based research related to advanced heart failure, MCS, cardiogenic shock, or transplantation.

Requirements
Adult Cardiac Surgeon Qualifications:
- M.D./D.O., or international medical degree (e.g. MBBS) from an accredited institution.
- Completion of an ACGME-accredited or internationally recognized cardiothoracic surgery training program
- Board certified or board eligible in Thoracic Surgery; or eligible and willing to obtain ABTS certification.
- Training and clinical experience in adult cardiac surgery, including CABG and valve surgery
- Possession or eligibility to obtain an unrestricted CA Medical License
Adult Cardiac Surgeon Qualifications Required at the Time of Appointment:
- Minimum two years of experience or exposure to heart transplantation sufficient to support and assist recipient surgery. Experience can include exposure in post-graduate or fellowship training.
- Possession of, or eligibility to obtain and maintain, a valid DEA registration by the start date.

Advanced Heart Failure & Cardiac Transplant Surgeon Qualifications:
- M.D./D.O., or international medical degree (e.g. MBBS) from an accredited institution.
- Completion of an ACGME-accredited or internationally recognized cardiothoracic surgery training program
- Board certified or board eligible in Thoracic Surgery; or eligible and willing to obtain ABTS certification.
- Training and clinical exposure to advanced heart failure therapies, including durable LVADs and temporary MCS.
- Possession or eligibility to obtain an unrestricted CA Medical License
Advanced Heart Failure & Cardiac Transplant Surgeon Qualifications at the Time of Appointment:
- Minimum of one year of experience as an assistant or primary transplant surgeon within the last 5 years at an established transplant surgeon.
- Possession of, or eligibility to obtain and maintain, a valid DEA registration by the start date.
