The Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell General Surgery Residency program at Vassar Brothers Medical Center currently has an unexpected opening for a categorical PGY 3 position available for the academic year starting 7/1/2026. Our campus is located at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. The general surgery residency program at Northwell Health provides comprehensive training to ensure residents can transition into competent, independent surgeons; capable of providing high-quality patient care.  The program helps trainees develop and sharpen skills that are vital for success and better patient outcomes by providing a diverse and thorough education: structured lectures on health care policy, hands-on training in surgical suites and non-invasive laboratories, practice management training and mentorship.

Requirements

Candidates must have successfully completed TWO (2) years in an ACGME accredited general surgery program (or are currently enrolled in as a PGY-2 in the 2025/2026 academic year).  Applicants with J-1 Visas will be considered.

Current CV.

3 letters of recommendation, including one from current or most recent Program Director.

USMLE Transcript (a first-time pass on both exams is required).

ABSITE PGY-1 and PGY-2 scores.

Personal statement.

Current ACGME “General Surgery Defined Category and Minimum” and “General Surgery Year 2 Minimum” case log reports.

Current year semi-annual Evaluation and ACGME Milestone reports.
